Rockford Register Star, Chuck Sweeny and WPA

Rockford Register Star's senior editor Chuck Sweeny wrote an Op-Ed piece on the Rockford Tea Party.

The Register Star's Op/Ed piece

Also, I spent some time inside the library today, rather than behind it dumping tea, and I learned the library was one of many projects in Rockford to benefit from WPA funding. How funny is it that these "tax objectors" will be protesting publicly funded economic stimulation in front of a building kept alive by public funds. I hope to post more on that soon.

  1. I find it most interesting that you are dedicating such effort to undermine and diminish the anger of the average taxpayer.

I voted for Obama, but I had no way of anticipating this kind of debt would be slapped on our children.

According to CBO, Americans will be in debt over 10 TRILLION dollars within 10 years with current policies in place.

How is that sustainable, when Bush II left office we were saddles with a staggering 510 BILLION? Do the math. Awful does not beget 20 times as awful!

  2. I am not attempting to undermine their anger. I am pointing out their hypocrisy. In this city, and this country we enjoy many institutions made possible by a similar piece of legislation 76 years ago.

My question to you and these people is What do you suggest? The tea baggers are full of anger and full of sarcasm but offer no ideas... no solutions. I suppose it's fun to sit and criticize and joke when you are the sore losers. It's probably more fun than participating in the solution.

  3. Dear Anonymous: The question that should first be asked is: Who squandered the billions of dollars in budget surpluses beginning in 2001? And the second question should be: For what and for whom? The answers??? The billions of dollars in budget surpluses were recklessly squandered by the greatest wealth redistribution in history, a redistribution from the bottom to the top tier of earners. The "tax cuts" which were the means to achieve this were compounded by the War in Iraq. This unnecessary and immoral war, paid for with borrowed money, has certainly bloated the coffers of Blackwater mercenaries, Halliburton/KBR contractors, and the rest of the parasitic military industrial complex. Couple all this with the reckless deregulation of the financial industry, and the resultant bailouts of the same, is it any wonder then that our fiscal house is in such disarray? Meanwhile, sectors of the economy and society which need attention were callously ignored by the Cheney/Bu$h Gang. The number of uninsured keeps growing, and at an even faster rate courtesy of the economic collapse. The priorities outlined by the President, and embodied in both his budget and stimulus, are necessary and long overdue. Though I don't agree with 100% of it either (e.g. the Geithner Public Private Investment Partnership), I do support its core elements: Health Care/Energy Independence/Public Education Reform. The only thing the obstructionists and reactionaries propose to do is either nothing at all, or champion the complete dismantling of an already frayed and tattered social safety net. In my opinion, both are complete non-starters. This past Presidential election was about Change, and Change means action, not inertia!
